FTW Staff Picks - DC Deck-Building Game

Among the online board game community, DC Deck-Building Game has been received mostly with negativity. Because of the stigma, I had decided to skip it for other similar deck-builders like Dominion and Legendary. Eventually, a new game group I had joined encouraged me to play DC: DBG with them and I figured it couldn't hurt to try. Before I knew it I had spent over $200 on three base sets, a handful of expansions, thousands of card sleeves and even a $30 Broken Token box insert.

DC: DBG doesn't reinvent the genre, nor does it excel at any one aspect. But where it shines is in its attractive theme and its ease of setup. The only other deck-builder that sets up as quickly would be Star Realms. As much as I love Legendary, the set up and take down of that game is a real time investment and could add up to 20 minutes to the runtime of the game.

And for those who wrote the game off from its first iteration, would have missed out on a lot of cool added features and balancing in the added base sets and small box expansions. Even the standalone, two-player game DC: Deck-Building Game: Rivals is a solid duel experience.

Sadly, my of DC: DBG doesn't get much run anymore but I still don't regret the money or time spent on everything. The game shined brightly with our group, and found more play than its other genre counterparts. It was our deck-builder of choice. And if you have any friends that are just getting into the hobby, I would definitely consider DC: DBG as a gateway candidate.
