FTW Staff Picks - Go Cuckoo!

If you've ever drawn straws to see who would have to do something, you may already be familiar with Go Cuckoo! Mixing together random draw, building and balancing, Go Cuckoo! is another great dexterity game we've recently added to our library.

In Go Cuckoo! players are given an equal number of eggs to begin the game. A bundle of sticks is placed randomly into the can. Players take turn drawing sticks from the can. Each stick is coloured on both ends. If the colours on both ends of the drawn stick don't match, the current player draws another stick that matches the colour of the bottom. If the colour is the same on both ends of the drawn stick, the current player stops drawing sticks. They will then place the pulled sticks into the nest horizontally. They may then place one of their eggs in the nest. If any of the eggs in the nest fall into the can during the current player's turn, they must take 1 egg from each other player. If any of the eggs in the nest fall out of the can, they add that egg to their pile.

Play continues until one player has successfully placed all of their eggs. That player then has to place Kiki Cuckoo in the nest. If any eggs fall, that player is responsible for those eggs and play goes on. If Kiki falls out of the nest, they must try again on their next turn. If they successfully place Kiki without anything falling, they are declared the winner of the game.

Even though Jenga remains the most played game at the cafe, we're always trying add a bit of diversity to the genre. There is such a wide-range of balancing games and there are even varying difficulties. Games like Click, Clack Lumberjack and Go Cuckoo! may look similar but they play very differently. Believe it or not, there is a strategy to all dexterity games. Just ask any street artist who balances rocks.
